where i am from...

i am from the inner city, from clanking radiators, lemon furniture polish and homemade sauce.
i am from a small house surrounded by gardens, apple trees and forts in the side yard.
i am from brothers and sisters and three to a room.  i am from from vanilla cream sodas at the pharmacy to
ham radios, and  homemade stereos.
i am from the nuns who threatened our lives and church every sunday.
i'm from the frugal, the long lived, the creative, the bossy, the kind and the struggling.
i'm from a world whose geography my children know better than i.
i am from long rides to the country and baseball seasons that went on forever.
from secret passwords to smoking in the woods and children who can fly if they try.
i'm from itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow pokadot bikinis to bathing caps at the country pond.
i'm from cracker jax with prizes inside and franks and beans on saturday nite.
from flickering super eight movies to the ed sullivan show.
i'm from family dinners and a mom who has a heart 40 times her size.
im from a bussling house with lots of friends and memories that never end.
the stories, the photos, the film reels, the love, it's all there.
a real family -  who could ask for more?

fall flavors...

with cooler weather upon us i will be back to the kitchen for bread baking and comfort food.
this will be first up on the list.   i just love the toasted pumpkin seed garnish.  enjoy.

roasted squash soup.
via food network

ingredients for the soup:
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 cup (1/4-inch) diced onion
1/4 cup (1/4-inch) diced celery
1/4 cup (1/4-inch) diced carrot
1 cinnamon stick
sea salt, preferably gray salt
freshly ground black pepper
about 4 cups chicken stock or canned low-salt chicken broth
1/2 teaspoon ground toasted coriander, optional
1 1/2 cups roasted winter squash
1/2 cup half-and-half, optional
to serve:
1/4 cup mascarpone cheese, optional
2 tablespoons toasted pumpkin seeds, optional

directions

heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat until hot. add the onion, celery, carrot, and cinnamon stick and saute until soft but not brown, about 10 minutes. season with salt and pepper.
add the chicken stock and the coriander, if using, and bring to a boil. simmer for several minutes. stir in the squash until smooth, then simmer gently to let the flavors meld, about 10 minutes. discard the cinnamon stick.
puree the soup in a blender until smooth. (the soup can be made ahead to this point, cooled, covered, and refrigerated for several days or frozen for about 1 month. it will thicken as it cools and may need thinning with stock or water when reheating.)

return the soup to the pan and reheat gently. add the half-and-half, if using. adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper. keep warm until serving.

to serve:
ladle the soup into serving bowls. garnish evenly, with the cheese and pumpkin seeds, if desired.

simple apple cake...

ingredients
2 cups sugar
1 1/4 cup light vegetable oil
2 eggs
3 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 tsp cinnamon
3 cups diced apples
2 cups chopped nuts (optional)

directions
1. preheat over to 350 degrees.
2. put all ingredients in one large bowl.
3. mix with your hands, gently, but thoroughly (do not use a spoon or mixer!).
4. bake in an ungreased 9×13 pan for 1 hour. cool before cutting.

really!! it’s that easy!

another fall favorite...

hot apple cider

ingredients
1 quart apple juice or cider
1 cinnamon stick
20 whole black peppercorns
3 whole cloves
1 to 2 tbsp. brown sugar
zest from 1/2 lemon

directions
1. toast cinnamon, peppercorns, and cloves over medium heat in a pot large enough to hold all the apple juice. stir occasionally to prevent burning. once the spices become very aromatic (after about a minute or two), they are done.
2. pour apple juice into the pan, turn heat to high, and bring to a boil. as the juice heats, add the brown sugar and stir until it dissolves.
3. after the apple juice has boiled, reduce heat to a simmer, and then add the lemon zest. Simmer for 30 minutes.
4. strain the cider using a fine mesh strainer.
5. serve hot, and enjoy!

at keene...

dear hayley, great job yesterday, glad we came to the game.
dear lauren, where were you when we took pictures? i had to steal this one from liz.  happy happy birthday.
dear liz, please take better care of michaela.  don't encourage bad behavior.
dear michaela, please be careful and don't study so hard that you fall asleep in the library and bang your head on the table. i figured that is what happened.

goodbye summer 2011...

dear summer,

thank you for the beach days, and warm nights.
for eating ice cream with abandon (thanks emily)
for allowing us the chance to sleep under the starry skies that blinked down on us.
thanks for the smell of fresh cut grass and beautiful flowers.
thanks for the fireworks and burgers on the grill.
thanks for the chance to allow us to drive, drive, and drive and eat, eat, eat.
thanks for the powerful hurricane that reminds us how small we are.
thanks for being you.

i'll miss you.

magic is something you make...

as usual, the weekend was so quick.   we hosted a birthday dinner for my sweet bff patti.
patti knows how to live life. she knows how to celebrate and embrace the moment.  she doesn't
let any fun get by her and she is always "doing" for everyone else. .. so she needed a special night just for "her" she is a friend everyone should have.  she truly puts effort into making people feel special.

happy birthday patti!

a little reminder...

last night i watched the sun set - and today i watched it come up again

life moves along.  fall is in the air.  sleep comes sparingly, lots on my mind.  is there ever peace?  a time when there is total peace? no worries, no cares, no fears?  i think not.  i've been hovering over my life like a helicopter, it takes a lot of work to keep my world spinning,   i want smallness when the world feels so big.  i know that with each door that closes another one opens.  i know that is true, i have lived it and i truly believe it.  but sometimes i get tired of coming up with a plan.  here on earth we will have many troubles and sorrows. sometimes i look around and i know mine are so minuscule compared to others, but sometimes i have no fight left.  sometimes i just want superpowers to make everything ok. it feels like i have had the sunnyside knocked out of me.  but tomorrow will be a new day with new possibilities and even when control drips through my hands like water, i try to remember to take a moment to breathe in and breathe out...

summer you have my heart...

even tho i am looking forward to fall, you still have my heart.  summer 2011 proved to be a good one.

and labor day weekend was steamy hot and humid.  we managed another road trip and it was fun and relaxing and productive.  we found lots of new restaurants, drinks, recipes and ideas to put on our master list of things to do/places to visit.

when tapas is better than dinner
and sunday morning coffee lasts for hours

riverside hike..the damage from hurricane irene to the houses along  the river was much worse than we had expected...
its hard to tell here because it was so peaceful on this morning.

just love this bakery

                                                                           and this inn

and what pre-fall weekend would be complete without some warm, fresh from the oven,  cider donuts

just didn't get to see a real moose like i had hoped. maybe next time. i might have to take one of these

random video...

that i had to share.
i came across this video and honestly i am sure that at one time or another you have all had a pair of shoes that might be a little too tight.  and this really works!!!

september...

it's like a new year, a new beginning loaded with potential.  a fresh notebook with empty pages to write new stories in.  this is by far my most favorite time of year.  beautiful suuny days with crisp nights for snuggling up.  bring those cozy sweaters back into rotation.  steamy bowls of soup and crusty bread are on the menu. september sets the mood for lots of productivity and inspiration.
i have lots of projects on the horizon.  stay tuned.

once you are real - you can't be ugly...

.....show someone some extra love today.

"real isn't how you are made," said the skin horse. "it's a thing that happens to you. when a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you, then you become real."

"does it hurt?" asked the rabbit.

"sometimes," said the skin horse, for he was always truthful. "when you are real, you don't mind being hurt."
"does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"

"it doesn't happen all at once," said the skin horse. "you become. it takes a long time. that's why it doesn't often happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. generally, by the time you are real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out, and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. but these things don't matter at all, because once you are real, you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."
