i am learning balance...

when you spend lots and lots of years raising kids and pretty much on opposite schedules... then....
they all move out to condos and college etc.   you look at each other saying what now?   i am relearning balance.  balance of my independence and my dependence.  how to share space and time with someone else.  kind of like first grade only instead of milk and cookies there is wine, good meals and vacations....

vacation was a hoot.  so many laughs...

talk about spunk....
talk about relaxing...

generations...
and family...

sweetest little girl in this whole world...
and drinks...
and food....
and st. patrick's day...
and lovely ladies who know how to live...
and you gotta go off roading with these two....

                                                          we could hardly keep up....

"things" i love.

arugula salad with dried oranges, avocado and pine nuts

perfect lunch for an almost spring day.....

toast pine nuts in a dry skillet until lightly browned. plate the arugula (as many servings as needed). top each serving with a few slices of avocado, a few pieces of dried orange, and a handful of pine nuts. dress lightly with a splash of olive oil, a squeeze of lemon and salt and pepper.

go to monday night supper...

so it's a random chilly monday night.  the kids are coming over for dinner and you are not sure what to make.   you don't want to be slaving over the stove but you want something warm and satisfying.   this simple bowl of pasta is over-the-top amazing and so easy to boot. all you do is make a plain tomato sauce (empty a can of good-quality plum or cherry tomatoes (san marzano)  into a pot, add two cloves of garlic, a sprinkle of salt to taste and a few spoonfuls of good-quality olive oil; and bring the tomatoes to a simmer before letting the sauce cook over medium-low heat for about 20 to 30 minutes, adding some fresh basil at the end)  boil up a bunch of penne, rigatoni or any type you like in salted water until it's al dente. then, in a serving bowl, combine the drained pasta with the tomato sauce--but, before mixing it all together, add a big dollop of fresh ricotta (calculate a scant 1/4 cup per person). if you can find ricotta imported from italy, use that: it's worth it. working quickly, mix the cheese, sauce and pasta together until you have a pink sauce that's fragrant and creamy and delicious, then serve immediately with grated imported parmigiano and crusty bread.. they will be impressed.

rinse and repeat...

i didn't wash my hair today. seriously,  this does not seem like a big dilema but i wash my hair
evey single day of the year.  my hairdresser trys to convince me that it's not necessary but
i just can't get past it.  today was a laid back kind of day so i decided the blow drying etc it withstands every day can not be a good thing. it needed a break.  so today i left it.   i can't believe i actually almost convinced myself it was not that big of a deal.  hair is such a personal thing.  so many of us even actually attach it to how our day will go.  silly as it seems a bad hair day can set the stage for a completely bad day.
after all, one of the most important things a woman can have is a good hairdresser.

happy birthday with love.

happy birthday joe.

the branches on the trees are starting to show signs of life. i want to believe that means new hope.
spring is nearby. new beginnings and a new season. life is about beginnings and endings but also about muddling through the middle. true bravery is about being conscious of all of life -  good and bad.

you may have been through an earthquake and you are left to rearrange the pieces.  there may be after shocks but we know you can do it.  being brave is about choosing to do what needs to be done.  we believe in you and we love you so very, very, much.

thoughts.

i want my day to feel like the first sips of hot coffee.
i want my next success to feel like swinging on a swing and almost touching the sky.
i want my body to feel like the first few beats of a favorite dance song.
i want smiling to feel like the first daffodil in spring.
i  want my friendships to feel like warm winter coats and cool summer breezes.
i want my nervous system to feel like warm sun on my face.
i want my neighborhood to feel like my best friend's hand in mine.
i  want my integrity to feel like the beating of a human heart.
i want my life to feel safe like snuggling under my favorite blanket.
i want kissing to feel like the first snow.
i want my challenges to feel like snowboarding for the first time.
i want my hugs to feel like all the worlds troubles will melt away.
i want my laughter to feel like ocean waves.
i want the end of the day to feel like a beautiful sunset.
i want my love to feel like standing at the base of mountains and at the peak of mountains.
i want my writing to feel like i mean it.
i want my ideas to feel like standing at the edge of the ocean.
